Civil Ceremonys

Civil wedding ceremonies are becoming very popular and I have photographed many of them over the past few years. I am often asked by couples if I can show them some photographs from some of these weddings. I can understand why this is a frequent request: the fact that the ceremony is different from a Church ceremony and in a different location is something that may worry the couple when it comes to having their photographs taken. They often wonder how it will look and how their photographs will turn out in different surroundings. While it is impossible to show couples samples of every wedding I cover, I would like to show one example here of a civil ceremony I covered last year. This particular lovely Civil Ceremony took place in the Belling suite at Killashee House Hotel in Naas. The bride and groom on the day were from different parts of the world as were many of the guests that provided a cosmopolitan air to the day. Luis was from Spain and Nivash was from South Africa and they retired to the Original House for their Reception. I hope the following photographs which show a two page spread in a Wedding Book will give you a flavour of just what can be achieved on a wedding day irrespective of the type of ceremony involved.

Christmas Time...its all go!

Happy New everyone and apologies for not been around for so long! The weeks leading up to Christmas are usually a very busy time for me hence the lack of posts on the blog for some time. It is the time of year where I am normally busy working around the clock to get albums finished in time for Christmas. The newlyweds can spend their first Christmas together as a married couple relaxing over the holiday season while looking through their finished albums. It was also a very busy time of year for me shooting weddings and I only finished up on the 23rd with a wedding in Naas. Normally I would not work so close to Christmas as family life also has to taken into consideration but as the wedding was taken place in one of my favourite locations, Killashee House Hotel in Naas, I could'nt say no! Below are a few shots I took of some albums I finished coming up to Christmas.

Sinead & Tony choose the lovely traditional Classico album with double aperture cover and classic black pages. Traditional albums never go out of style and manufacturers are always coming up with new modern varients of the classic album.

Jennifer & Shane choose the Moderno digital album with a black cover. The Moderno is a large 12x12 digital album available in black or ivory. The cover adds a touch of the traditional to this album with a lovely silver trim finish.

Linda & Craig choose a Wedding Book by Graphi Studio with a Crystal Glance cover to complement a lovely image taken on their wedding day. This unique cover has a high-fashion look to it and can be customised with names as shown here. This album is in the vertical (book) format.

Nivash & Luis also choose a Wedding Book by Graphi Studio but with a classic black leather cover and both their first names were embossed on the cover. Simple and timeless. Shown is the landscape format album.

Last weeks post with the photo of the Bride wearing a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes got a very response from all the eagle eyed viewer out there! You can blame Carrie from SATC for starting all of this. Its only now after years of photographing weddings that I get the shoe 'thing'... most men still dont! What a beautiful day Jennifer and Eamonn had recently for their wedding day in Wexford. It's not called the Sunny South East for nothing! Jennifer and Eamonn tied the knot in the lovely surroundings of Crossabeg Church before proceeding to the wonderful Ferrycarraig Hotel just outside Wexford town for their reception with family and friends. The weather was absolutely wonderful and Jennifer, Eamonn and their bridal party pulled out all the stops to squeeze in some shots in the lovely surroundings of Johnstown Castle where the lovely autumn colours added to this amazing day. The evening eventually started to cool off but not before we managed to grab another few shots in the early evening dusk, a marvellous, atmospheric time of day at this time of year. A few images from the day are shown below.

Killashee House Hotel Wedding Fair 18th September

I will be attending the Killashee House Hotel Wedding Fair on the 18th of this month (Sept.)
One of my favourite locations for wedding photography in the Leinster area, Killashee House is like home from home for me. I have been photographing weddings at Killashee House from the day it opened its doors as I lived not too far from the hotel at the time. It is an amazing hotel for weddings and wedding photography with its original architectural features and stunning gardens. Actually I was even photographing in the School before it became a hotel and my wife has very fond memories of her school days there.

I will be available to have a chat with you on the day, show you some new album designs and work and I will even have an album on display that features previous work from weddings I have photographed at Killashee.

Vintage Heirloom Wedding Bouguets

I undertook a most unusual shoot recently for Naas florist Pauline Ford. Pauline makes these stunning Vintage Heirloom Wedding Bouquets that really are a beautiful piece of design work. The photo shoot was undertaken to launch these wonderful bouquets to the wedding market. These memorable bouguets are made to last a lifetime and hence their name. The added benefit of owning one of these bouquets is not just the glamour and unique look they provide on the wedding day itself, but the fact that you can hold it again and again while you remember your special day. Johnstown Castle,Wexford...a photographers blank canvas

I am lucky to have Johnstown Castle almost on my doorstep. It is a well know location for couples who get married locally and has been used down through the years to record their wedding memories

The castle as a backdrop is a photographers dream location especially for wedding photography. However, like all good photo locations it can become all to familiar to a couple looking to have their photographs taken there and this issue has come up with several couples I have spoken with recently. They all mention the fact that everyone seems to have the same photos taken at the castle, ie, standing infront of the lake with the castle in the background! While this is in itself a lovely photo, I can see where these couples are coming from. As a photographer who likes a challenge I have photographed several weddings at Johnstown Castle and I have never taken this 'famous' shot. Any photographer worth his salt especially when he is presented with such a marvellous location should be able to do a little better than relying on just getting shots in at the lake. I love the contrast between stone buildings and soft bridal colours, the ability to mix the stunning greenery with the stonework and human form and shape. A good photographers have to be able to think in several dimensions and take all his surroundings into account. Johnstown Castle provides that challenge to a photographer the minute he drives in through that lovely entrance. Never mind the lake..its all good! A few shots from a recent wedding at the castle.

As a wedding photographer I get to photograph weddings for couple's all across the country. Although a distant wedding can, at times, put a photographer under a little more pressure, a little planning on the photographers part can smooth things out and help in the days coverage. I can end up in the most unusual, not to mention the most beautiful, parts of this country. A recent wedding took me to one of my favourite locations, the lovely Lough Derg lakeside wedding venue of Coolbawn Quay. The countryside around this venue can only be described as stunning and as someone who loves the outdoor life it is always a pleasure to photograph a wedding at this location. The lakeside drive out from Nenagh through the lovely quaint village of Puckane with its tatched cottages, the rolling hills and tree-lined roads and the equally stunning village of Terryglass where most couples choose to take their vows in the Church of the Immaculate Conception certainly makes for a break from the ordinary. Helen & Luke decided to present their wedding images in the Moderno album.
This album is a flush mounted digital album with 12x12 inch pages which are quite large for a wedding album.
This gives me great scope for design and picture layout and brings the large images to life. The album is available in black or cream with a lovely photo insert on the cover and a magnetic clasp to close the album cover.

Kilkea Castle...A Possible Return To Business?

When Kilkea Castle in Kildare went into receivership some time ago it was like loosing an old friend. I had come to know the castle staff well over the years and loved shooting weddings at this lovely location.

It provided an amazing backdrop for wedding photography and it was one of my favourite locations in the Kildare area. So when I opened the Property pages of the Irish Times recently I was delighted to see the Castle was generating some good interest from possible buyers. Most of this interest was coming from possible vendors in America after the Ccastle featured on the American TV Business channel, Bloomberg. Several investors have made appointments to view the Castle and its 145 acre estate. Hopefully this lovely property will be back on the wedding venue's market soon!

I have for several years been asked by couples if I supply 'Thank You' cards. My answer was no..up until now that is! I finally decided to provide this service after receiving some of these cards from past weddings I photographed. One of my imagesfrom the wedding day would normally be used on the cards but to be honest the majority of these cards are printed to a very poor standard and the quality of most of what I have seen is exceptionally low.

The cards I am supplying are high quality in print, card weight and are supplied with envelopes and because I have full control over the design & digital imaging, the final product is way ahead of anything I have seen so far. The normal 'Thank You' greeting inside the card can be personalized by the bride & groom to say whatever they would like. Cards can also be ordered in very reasonable amounts of 25 cards & envelopes.

After a proposal in the city that never sleeps, Orla & Frank tied the knot recently at St.Peters Church, Two-Mile-House, Naas and held their reception at the lovely Killashee House Hotel. Despite a few mishaps on the day including some very heavy April showers of hail, Orla & Frank really pulled out the stops to get some lovely shots on the day.

New Coffee Table Style Parent & Guest Books

I have just introduced a new type of Parent or Guest book. These books are printed by digital-offset and are generally referred to as coffee table books. The quality is first class with heavy lustre quaility pages that are stitched bound with a hard back photo cover. The album is a generous 10x8 inches in size. The albums will normally have the same selection of images that the Bride and Groom's main album will have and the layout is normally one image per page but there can be exceptions to this as you will see in the images below. These albums can be ordered in any amount from one to...well whatever amount you would like!

Leinster Leader Wedding Page

The well known Kildare regional newspaper, the Leinster Leader has, after 100 years, re-launched itself this week with a totally new design and format. It has changed from its longstanding broadsheet format to the more 'user friendly' tabloid format like the Irish Independent did some time ago. It has also included a new weekly 'Wedding Page' and hence my interest in its arrival as I recently had a call from the feature's editor asking if I could supply some images of local couples that tied the knot recently. I duly obliged and this first edition of the new paper featured 3 of my images on the page.

IPPA National Photographic Awards

The Burlington Hotel was the venue for this years IPPA National Photographic Awards. Although I was through to the finals and shortlisted in three categories I was under no illusion that I was going to top the polls as I only entered one judging session during the year. The 5 Gold Awards I won in this single entry was enough to get me through so I was more than happy to be able to achieve this result from one round as there are 5 round throughout the year. I was delighted to be awarded with a Certificate Of Excellence for the quaility of work I submitted and for reaching the finals. Several of my prints were also picked for the National Awards Exhibition roadshow which will be touring the country for the next twelve months. Irish Professional Photographers Association Annual Awards

The highlight of the year for professional photographers is fast approaching with the Annual IPPA National Photographic Awards taking place this Sunday 27th February at the Burlington Hotel in Dublin. The Awards are an annual event with awards been presented to the best photographers in their respective disciplines for example Wedding Photographer Of The Year, Portrait Photographer Of The Year etc. The standard of work at this level of the competition is extremely high with only the best images (and photographers) getting through to the finals.
I am happy to say that I am through to the finals of several of the Wedding categories for this years awards but with the competition been so tough I am not holding my breath! I will however pick up my 7 Gold Awards on the night which got me through to the finals.

St. Helens Bay - A magical location

St. Helens Bay Golf Resort is one of the best known golf resorts in the country. Just before last Christmas I photographed a wedding that held its reception at the Resort Clubhouse. On the day of the wedding the Bride's house was surrounded by several inches of snow but at the Resort there was no snow to be found-none whatsoever! Talk about the Sunny South East - it certainly lived up to its reputation that day. St. Helens is situated in the very south east, a stones throw from Rosslare. The Resort will be holding a wedding evening on the 27th of March from 4 until 7 and I will be in attendance due to an invitation to attend as the sole photographer on the day by Liz the wedding manager. The function room at the Clubhouse offers a beautiful panoramic view of the bay, the famous Tuskar Rock lighthouse and the Golf course.

I will be attending the Wedding Evening this Thursday the 24th February from 6 till 9 at the wonderful Killashee House Hotel in Naas. Killashee House is one of my favourite wedding locations and a hotel I have been involved with ever since it opened its doors 12 years ago.

The hotel has managed to gain an enviable reputation over the years and it is a fantastic hotel for wedding day photography. The staff are the most professional you can meet in the business and I have come to know most of them personally including photographing several of the managers weddings. If you are in the hotel at anytime please have a look at the sample album I have in the foyer showing some samples of previous work I have undertaken there. The above image taken during a summer wedding last year shows some of the wonderful gardens and fountain and the image below was taken just before Christmas.

Osprey Hotel Wedding Fair

The Osprey Hotel & Spa Wedding Fair, which I attended yesterday, turned out to be a very busy day for all involved. Visitors were greeted with a nice glass of champagne and given the opportunity to take a tour of the hotel and talk with the wedding co-ordinator about their wedding day requirements. I had a very busy afternoon showing some of my work and album designs to interested couples and an even busier day today answering further inquiries which I am always happy to do. The hotel is a very contemporary design and taking advantage of this can lead to some very unusual and exciting photography. I will be posting some images shortly from a wedding I covered at the hotel. Meanwhile local press photographer Jimmy Fullham was on hand to cover the days events for the local media. As much as I hate been infront of the camera, thanks for the image Jimmy!

Carton House Advertising Campaign

Its always nice to see your work in print and even nicer when your images are used nationwide in the print media and on TV. The beautiful Carton House in Maynooth recently undertook a major country wide advertising campaign for its wedding offerings. They ran advertisements for a full week in local and national newspapers, the RTE Guide and on TV AM . All the image they used were from a lovely wedding I shot in Carton House last year. The image shown here is a two page spread from a regional newspaper.

New Website Design

It will be slimmed down and streamlined a little with some up-to-date features added and new work displayed at its best showing larger than normal images which are an important feature for any photographer. So, what make a good Wedding photograph?

This is one question that is so often discussed among professional wedding photographers that I don't think the definite answer has yet been formulated! However there are certain basic elements required for an initial 'good' photograph that should come as second nature to any professional photographer such as sharpness, colour balance, contrast, lighting to name but a few. A comment I hear regularly from couples who come to book me is that they 'hate having their photograph taken'. Welcome to the club! I would say, from experience, that they are not alone and that most people are in the same boat myself included. How a photographer approaches a wedding day and how he interacts with his clients plays a major roll in obtaining good images. I tell all my couples that how their wedding photos turn out will depend on one simple fact - who much they are enjoying themselves and their day! Simple.

I like to get involved with the couple from the moment the day starts and embed myself in the days shoot. I will take last minute requests onboard and listen to any suggestion the couple may have if time prevails.

The image here is what I would regard as a very good wedding image for several reasons not least of all the good sunny day! The most important element here is the interaction between the couple themselves. They are very comfortable with each other and clearly enjoying the day. Because they both grew up near the beach they had requested a few shot there before going to the hotel. Just as I had finished some nice shots along the beach I noticed this small wall right infront of the surf shack and could just picture the final image in my head. Although they were more than relaxed enough at this stage, I suggested the bride take her shoes off to empty out any sand she may have in them and to leave them off for the shot which she was more than happy to do. Very little further direction was required on my part. All I said was ignore me, soak up the sun, enjoy the cool breeze and.......MAGIC!

Whites is one of Wexford's best known hotels which underwent a major 50m refurbishment a couple of years ago. Its situated right in the middle of the town with easy access from all the surrounding Church's.

I thought I would show you what a finished client's Queensberry custom designed album looks like.
This is the 12x15 album in black classic leather with both names embossed onto the front cover.

A range of cover options are available with photos etc, but this design is particulary nice with a very straight design and complements the simple classic cover. The album uses a combination of Wing and Flip pages which gives it a clear unique finish. The mixture of Ivory, Mist and Black pages also complement the colour and black and white images.
